Northing(s) and Easting(s)

Good to have you here, you probably got here because you needed to know what the term Easting and Northings are.

Of course knowledge is key. I won't expect you to know that though, except you are in the Geography or Geology discipline. Funny enough, not everyone in Geography can tell you what these two words are.

So let's get started with the explanation of what these two terms are; They (Northings & Eastings) are both geographic Cartesian coordinates for a point.
Northings & Eastings
Northings

A figure or line representing northward distance on a map (expressed by convention as the second part of a grid reference, after easting). Northing refers to the northward-measured distance (or the y-coordinate). When the lines of Latitude (horizontal lines) move continually upwards to the North, is referred to as Northings.
What do I mean by northward distance?
This simply means a progressive upward movement towards the North pole from the equator.

Eastings
Easting refers to the eastward-measured distance (or the x-coordinate). That is, the lines of Longitude moving eastward, usually in a clock-wise direction. In this case, the lines of Longitude are moving in a clock-wise direction towards the east otherwise referred to as Eastings.

Easting and Northing coordinates are commonly measured in metres from a horizontal datum. However, imperial units (example, survey feet) are also used. The coordinates are most commonly associated with the Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system (UTM), which has unique zones that cover the Earth to provide detailed referencing.

I mentioned the lines of Longitude & Latitude earlier on, and someone who doesn't know what they are would be wondering. So let me save you the stress.
Latitude and longitude are imaginary (unreal) lines drawn on maps to easily locate places on the Earth -MAPSTATS
Latitude & Longitude
Longitudes
longitude is distance east or west of the prime meridian (an imaginary line running from north to south through Greenwich, England), a vertical line running straight from the north pole, down to the south.

Latitude
These are horizontal lines running from east - west. Latitude is distance north or south of the equator (an imaginary circle around the Earth halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole).

Both are measured in degrees. Longitude and Latitude totaling 180 and 360 degrees respectively. (symbolized by °).
