World Environment Day, 2018

World Environment Day

Did you know that 5th June of every year is World Environment Day?
Well I'm guessing you don't or maybe you do. The World Environment Day is celebrated every 5th of June in more than one hundred and forty (140) countries in the world.

It is the United Nation's principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.

It might interest you to know that Public institutions, NGOs, the business sector and even schools celebrate this day by organizing ecological actions, symposiums, education/awareness etc.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution”
WED has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, WED has a new theme that major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments and celebrities worldwide adopt to advocate environmental causes. - Wikipedia
Some ways by which we can beat plastic pollution, I have listed below.
How to Beat Plastic Pollution
  • Refuse plastic cutlery when you take away food from the restaurant or eatery.
  • Don't use disposable plastic cups for tea or coffee.
  • Carry your own water bottles and avoid buying plastic-bottled water. You can fill up the bottle from drinking water dispensers.
  • Next time you go shopping, bring along your own shopping bag.
  • Learn to put pressure on food suppliers to use non-plastic packaging.
  • Take-out containers are another big source of plastic pollution. Why not just carry your own containers? Though this will not be easy for starters, but with time, you’ll be used to it.
  • Refuse that non-reusable plastic straw your vendor offers you along with that refreshing beverage
  • And lastly on this list, use the hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution to show your support.
These are just the few and easy ways. But there are more ways too, feel free to leave a comment and remember this; IF YOU CANNOT REUSE IT, REFUSE IT!
Keep the Environment safe and we all will be safe!
