Drones

Drone is an aircraft that can be navigated without a human pilot on board the aerial vehicle. Sometimes called Unmanned Ariel Vehicle (UAV). The drone may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with onboard sensors and GPS.

Drones have grown in popularity over the years, and new models are continually been released lately with newer and better features. Some of these drones are equipped with cameras that allow the user to record and take pictures while on-flight using controlled navigation. Drones are often used for the purpose of recording, some at a more professional level such as security surveillance, capturing of aerial imagery and a whole lot of other things we will get to find out here as we go on.

Drones are one of the great technological success stories of the 21st century so far. The phenomenal rise in drone usage has led to the development of ever more sophisticated software, among which is 3D mapping software. Some which are used in producing digital elevation models (DEM)

 Types of Drone
Just so you know, drones are of different types. They vary both in size, capability and functionality. Here is a brief run-down of the various types of drones.

Based on Rotor
  • Fixed-Wing Hybrid VTOL
  • Single-Rotor Helicopter
  • Fixed-Wing
  • Multi-Rotor
Based on size
  • Large Drones: These types of drones are as large as a small aircraft. These kind of drones are commonly used by the the US Army. Surveillance duties can also be carried out by these drones due to the powerful cameras attached to their bodies which can study an area from several hundred feet above the ground.
  • Medium Drones: These are smaller than light aircrafts, but still quite large. They usually need to be carried by two people, and can weigh up to 200kgs.
  • Small Drones: These are bigger than the micro drones, but still quite smaller than the medium-sized drones. They do not exceed 2 meters in length and usually have fixed wings. Bigger than the "very small drones" that are as small as insect, they can be thrown into the air by hand from where they continue gliding easily in the air.
Uses of Drones
Drones has a whole lot of uses which ranges from monitoring of a sporting activity, surveying an area and lots more. Below is a list of some of them;
  • Remote sensing
  • Aids in mapping out residential or industrial layouts
  • Monitor livestock on vast spreads of land
  • Disaster relief
  • Real estate and construction
  • film-making & making of music videos
  • Used to gather geological information with the aid of special cameras
Believe me when I say, areas of drone application is very broad and almost countless. So let's have a pause here, we will talk more on that later.

Thanks, for your time.
